Besides, what are we talking about when we talk about personal data? And why should they be protected?

“Protecting my personal data, I don’t care, I have nothing to hide”

Respect for privacy and the protection of personal data are themes that are in great need of pedagogy. When we talk about privacy and its issues: nothing is really visible, nothing is immediate, and the exploitation of personal data is a distant threat, a little vague, like global warming 30 years ago.

When we warn about the risks we quickly come up against the famous “Protect my personal data, I don’t care, I have nothing to hide”. Edward Snowden explained it a long time ago: it is equivalent to saying that we do not need freedom of speech, because we have nothing to say.

Real stories about privacy

At Qwant, we are convinced that privacy is a condition of freedom. But we are also aware that a real work of awareness and pedagogy is necessary. This is why, on the occasion of Data Protection Day (European equivalent of Global Privacy Day), we worked to identify, process and illustrate – lightly – REAL stories around privacy, and the exploitation of personal data. Edifying, disturbing and sometimes funny, these stories are all authentic. We are delighted to show you a first example today!
