This has been Qwant’s project for several years now: to make the web accessible to children.

Make the Internet a tool to support the youngest towards play, news, knowledge, while respecting the privacy of children, their families, and guaranteeing them a safe environment, where the attention of the youngest is not an economic issue.

What’s new on Qwant Junior?

With new features and a redesigned graphic identity that focuses navigation on 5 major dedicated themes, Qwant launches the new version of its Qwant Junior search engine suitable for children from 6 to 12 years old. Search on the web, find and follow information, learn with National Education programs, discover games and activities to grow and have fun, are all features now gathered in Qwant Junior for children, their parents and teachers.

Qwant Junior is accessible for free from any browser and also thanks to its Android and Apple iOS application. More than one in two households with children is equipped with a tablet and according to the study* Junior Connect ‘2017, 7-12 year olds spend an average of 6h10 per week on the internet, and 24% have a personal smartphone**. Qwant Junior is for them a suitable tool, to discover and make discover all the riches of the web, protecting them from inappropriate content (hatred, violence, pornography).

The new version of Qwant Junior, launched today, offers a brand new graphic identity that focuses the user’s navigation on 5 themes; a mascot and a specific color being associated with each of them. When the child makes a search, content related to the keywords entered and from different universes (Inform me — Play — Do activities) is also displayed on the same page. In terms of ergonomics, a suitable dark mode will also be made available to users, while maintaining the colors of the different themes.
Qwant Junior is available in its entirety in French as well as in German, English and Italian for the themes Search and inform me. In these other languages, the other three parts will be greyed out and available soon.

How does it work?

This is the homepage of Qwant Junior. Beyond the classic search cartridge, a “video of the day” is highlighted as well as categorized videos (news – influencers / youtubers – educational and educational channels). Extras such as the reverse search engine as well as the Unbeatables® game are also displayed.

In this part will be presented the results of news corresponding to the research and selected in a general feed of media adapted to 6-12 years (1jour1 actu, France 24 Junior, National Geographic, GeoAdo etc). In addition, broad categories of topics of interest to children will also be presented to users such as Society, Sport, Animals, Culture and Science.

This is a white list where all the content offered is related to the school program defined by the National Education. They can be sorted according to several types (exercises or courses) and grade levels with the programs of Mathematics, History, Language, Science … from CP to 5th grade.

The user can find here a set of games from a whitelist, all suitable for children from 6 to 12 years old. The composition of this whitelist is based on the recommendations of game publishers and offers several categories: Sport, Reflection, Action, Drawing… In addition, a “way to play” filter is also proposed to select the games according to whether you want to play alone, in pairs or with others.

This theme presents the user with fun and educational activities. As in the Play section, several categories are proposed: Manual activities (scientific experiment, magic, making objects), Reading (stories and humor!), Cooking (adapted recipes), Outdoor activities (rules of the game of the prison ball for example).
